Avianca Airlines’ baggage policy is similar to that of other large airlines.
1 – 2 checked bags are included in your fare, depending on your travel class and destination, with additional fees charged for extra bags above your free baggage allowance.
The overweight and oversized baggage fees will depend on the weight, size, and route, as explained below.
Avianca Carry-On Allowance
On all Avianca flights, each passenger is allowed one (1) carry-on bag and one (1) personal item.
The carry-on hand luggage must not weigh more than 22 pounds (10 kilos) and the external dimensions (H+L+W) must not exceed 115 centimeters (45 inches).
The personal item includes one of the following: ladies purse, blanket, walking cane, camera, binoculars, photo equipment, video/laptop computer, items consumed by infants during the flight, baby cot, or wheelchair/crutches/prostheses.
*Note: Avianca personnel have the ability to further limit this allowance in the cabin provided available space in the aircraft. All hand luggage must fit in the overhead compartments or under the seat in front of the passenger.
REMINDER: Bulkhead seats do not have underseat storage during take-off and landing.
Avianca Checked Baggage Allowance
Free baggage allowance for flights within Colombia :
- Business Class- 2 pieces of luggage with a maximum weight of 70 lbs (32 kg) each and total dimensions not exceeding 158 cm (62 in)
- Economy Class- 1 pieces of luggage with a maximum combined weight of 50 lbs (23 kg) and total dimensions not exceeding 158 cm (62 in)
Free baggage allowance on international flights to/from the USA, Mexico, Canada, and Spain:
- Business Class- 2 pieces of luggage with a maximum combined weight of 70 lbs (32 kg) and total dimensions not exceeding 158 cm (62 in)
- Economy Class- 2 pieces of luggage with a maximum combined weight of 50 lbs (23 kg) and total dimensions not exceeding 158 cm (62 in)
Free baggage allowance on international flights to/from Latin America:
- Business Class- 2 pieces of luggage with a maximum combined weight of 70 lbs (32 kg) and total dimensions not exceeding 158 cm (62 in)
- Economy Class- 1 pieces of luggage with a maximum weight of 50 lbs (23 kg) and total dimensions not exceeding 158 cm (62 in)

All bags must adhere to the size and weight requirements unless otherwise noted:
- Maximum Dimensions: 158 cm/ 62 inches (length+width:height)
- Maximum Weight: 32 kg (70 lbs)
Avianca Overweight Baggage Fees
On flights within Colombia, a maximum excess weight of 45 kilograms (100lbs) is allowed.
The overweight baggage will be charged at a rate of COP 5,000 per additional kilo.
On international flights to/from USA, Canada, and Mexico, any bag between 50 pounds (23 kilos) and 70 pounds (32 kilos) is considered overweight baggage.
A fee of USD $55 will be charged for each piece.
Any bag between 70 lbs (32 kgs) and 100 lbs (45 kilos) will be charged a fee of USD $100 per piece.
On international flights to Spain, any bag weighing between 50 lbs (23 kgs) and 70 lbs (32 kgs) will be charged a fee of USD 70 per bag.
On international flight from Spain, any bag weighing between 50 lbs (23 kgs) and 70 lbs (32 kgs) will be charged a fee of EUR 50 per bag.
On international flights within Latin America the following fees will apply:
- In 1st bag: Baggage between 50 pounds (23 kilos) and 70 pounds (32 kilos) will be charged USD $100 per bag
- Baggage between 70 pounds (32 kilos) and 100 pounds (45 kilos) will be charged USD $160 per bag
- In 2nd bag: Baggage less than 50 pounds (23 kilos) will be charged USD $40 per bag
- Baggage between 50 pounds (23 kilos) and 70 pounds (32 kilos) will be charged USD $100 per bag
- Baggage between 70 pounds (32 kilos) and 100 pounds (45 kilos) will be charged USD $160 per bag
*Note: For all regions, no baggage over 101 pounds (46 kilos) or whose external dimensions exceed 215 centimeters (85 inches) will be accepted as checked baggage.
Avianca Oversize baggage fees
For flights within Colombia, any oversize baggage whose dimensions are between 158 centimeters (62 inches) and 230 centimeters (90.5 inches) will be charged COP 100,000 per bag.
On international flights to/from USA, Canada, and Mexico, any oversize baggage whose dimensions are between 158 centimeters (62 inches) and 230 centimeters (90.5 inches) will be charged USD $100 per bag.
On international flights to Spain, any oversize baggage whose dimensions are between 158 centimeters (62 inches) and 230 centimeters (90.5 inches) will be charged USD $100 per bag.
On international flights from Spain, any oversize baggage whose dimensions are between 158 centimeters (62 inches) and 230 centimeters (90.5 inches) will be charged EUR 100 per bag.
On international flights within Latin America, any oversize baggage whose dimensions are between 158 centimeters (62 inches) and 230 centimeters (90.5 inches) will be charged USD $140 per bag.
Avianca Excess Baggage Fees
For flights within Colombia, the following charges apply for extra baggage:
- An additional piece weighing less than or equal to 50 pounds (23 kilos) and with dimensions up to 158 centimeters (62 inches) will be charged at a rate of COP 100,000 per piece.
- An additional piece weighing between 50 pounds (23 kilos) and 100 pounds (45 kilos) and with dimensions up to 230 centimeters (90.5 inches) will be charged at a rate of COP 200,000 per piece.
On international flights to/from USA, Canada, and Mexico, the following charges apply for extra baggage:
- An additional piece weighing less than or equal to 50 pounds (23 kilos) and with dimensions up to 158 centimeters (62 inches) will be charged at a rate of USD $125 for the first piece, and USD $200 for the second piece and any additional pieces.
- An additional piece weighing between 50 pounds (23 kilos) and 70 pounds (32 kilos) and with dimensions up to 158 centimeters (62 inches) will be charged at a rate of USD $150 for the first piece, and USD $200 for the second piece and any additional pieces.
- An additional piece weighing between 70 pounds (32 kilos) and 100 pounds (45 kilos) and with dimensions up to 215 centimeters (85 inches) will be charged at a rate of USD $175 for the first piece, and USD $225 for the second piece and any additional pieces.
On international flights to Spain, the following charges apply for extra baggage:
- An additional piece weighing less than or equal to 50 pounds (23 kilos) and with dimensions up to 158 centimeters (62 inches) will be charged at a rate of USD $200 per piece.
- An additional piece weighing between 50 pounds (23 kilos) and 70 pounds (32 kilos) and with dimensions up to 230 centimeters (90.5 inches) will be charged at a rate of USD $270 per piece.
On international flights from Spain, the following charges apply for extra baggage:
- An additional piece weighing less than or equal to 50 pounds (23 kilos) and with dimensions up to 158 centimeters (62 inches) will be charged at a rate of EUR 150 per piece.
- An additional piece weighing between 50 pounds (23 kilos) and 70 pounds (32 kilos) and with dimensions up to 230 centimeters (90.5 inches) will be charged at a rate of EUR 200 per piece.
On international flights within Latin America, the following charges apply for extra baggage:
- An additional piece weighing less than or equal to 50 pounds (23 kilos) will be charged USD $160 per bag
- An additional piece weighing between 50 pounds (23 kilos) and 70 pounds (32 kilos) will be charged USD $210 per bag
- An additional piece weighing between 70 pounds (32 kilos) and 100 pounds (45 kilos) will be charged USD $260 per bag
Sports Equipment
The following items are considered as baggage provided they meet the set weight and size requirements: golf equipment, fishing equipment, diving equipment, bicycles, archery equipment, bowling equipment, kitesurfing equipment, skiing equipment, surf equipment, and hand gliding equipment.
The following items will incur additional charges on international flights: surf boards, kitesurfing equipment, and hang gliders.
Does Avianca charge for baggage?
Avianca’s M, L, XL, and XXL fares include checked baggage.
Depending on your fare type, Avianca includes either 1 or 2 pieces of checked baggage in a passenger’s standard allowance. XS and S fares do not include any checked luggage.
Does Avianca include baggage?
Avianca’s baggage policy is:
- XS and S Fares: No checked luggage included
- M and L Fares: 1 x 50-pound (23 kg) bag
- XL Fare: 1 x 70-pound (32 kg) bag
- XXL Fare: 2 x 70-pound (32 kg) bags
How many bags can you carry on Avianca?
Avianca allows all passengers to bring 1 personal item into the cabin. S, M, L, XL, and XXL fare types are also permitted to bring a standard piece of carry-on.
The standard carry-on bag must not exceed 45 linear inches (115 cm) and can weigh up to 22 pounds (10 kg).
For personal items, the size should not exceed 18 x 14 x 10 inches (45.7 x 35.6 x 25.4 cm) and fit under the seat.
