Aer Lingus’ checked baggage policy is a little unusual for its European flights but provides lots of flexibility for purchasing different weights, with the ability to split that weight across multiple pieces.

Baggage can be up to 50% cheaper when purchased online at booking, so make sure you plan ahead for the cheapest rates.

Aer Lingus Airlines Cabin Baggage (Carry-on)

Passengers traveling with Aer Lingus are permitted to bring one carry-on bag to be stowed in the overhead compartment and one personal bag, like a purse or laptop case. 

Carry-on luggage weight is restricted to 10kg and the dimensions must be no greater than 55x40x25cm.

The personal bag or item cannot exceed 25x20x33cm in dimension.

The personal bag must fit under your seat and be sure to pack essentials like medication and identification in your carry-on, not any bags you may be checking.

Aer Lingus Airlines Checked Baggage

On Aer Lingus flights, any class of passengers except Savers can enjoy one free checked bag.

The maximum dimension of the bag is 158cm and the weight limit is 32kg.

Beyond the first complimentary bag, additional checked baggage rates differ depending on your route. 

Flights within Europe have three options: 20kg or 25kg in one bag or 40kg spread over two bags.

Transatlantic flights also have three options: One bag at 20 or 25kg, or 30kg spread over two bags.

Business and BusinessFlex customers are allowed up to three pieces of checked baggage, totaling no more than a combined 70kg weight restriction.

Note that all baggage allowances are per passenger, each way. 

Saver Fares are not permitted any checked baggage.

Costs range from 45 Euros for 20 kgs to 55 Euros for up to 30 kg.

Other fares range from 60 Euros for 20kgs to 70 Euros for up to 30kg. 

These fares are for online booking.

Checked Baggage Fees

Short-haul flights (intra-Europe)

  • Low fare – Baggage fees apply for each checked bag as below. Additional excess fees apply for baggage over the maximum 44 lb/20 kg in total checked baggage weight per passenger.
  • Flexifare – Baggage fees apply for third and subsequent checked bag as below. Additional excess fees apply for all baggage over the maximum 44 lb/20 kg in total checked baggage weight per passenger.
  • Pay online up to two hours before departure at a discount or pay the full fee at the airport. See the table below for details.
  • Excess baggage fee will be charged for every kilogram over the 20 kg baggage allowance, regardless of how many bag fees purchased.

Overweight Baggage Fee for bag weighing 20-32 kg / 44-70 lb (per kilo in excess, per one-way flight): €9 / £6 / $12 if paid online, €15 / £12 / $20 if paid at the airport.

Long-haul Flights (to/from USA)

  • Economy, low fare – 2nd and each subsequent bag weighing up to 50 lb/23 kg will be charged.
  • Economy, flex fare – 3rd and each subsequent bag weighing up to 50 lb/23 kg will be charged.
  • Business Class – 3 bags up to a total of 150 lb/69 kg carried free of charge.

Flights between Europe and USA:

  • Bags weighing up to 50 lb / 23 kg: €50 / £45 / $60
  • Bags weighing 51-70 lb / 24-32 kg: €50 / £45 / $60

No pooling or sharing of baggage allowances is permitted, even within a party traveling on the same booking. The fees are non-refundable.

Aer Lingus Excess Baggage Policy

If you have any additional checked bags or your bag weighs over the allowance permitted by your fare type or exceeds the permitted dimensions, excess baggage charges will apply.

Within Europe, you will be charged 10 Euros per kilo over the 20kg limit. 

Excess baggage on transatlantic flights, for all bags weighing 23kg-32kg, will cost you 75 Euros.

Aer Lingus Airlines Sports Equipment

If you plan to travel with sports equipment, Aer Lingus recommends that you book in advance.

The sports equipment will be transported as checked baggage.

The maximum weight cannot exceed 23kg.

Any weight over will be charged as excess baggage.

Passengers can carry a maximum of 1 piece of sports equipment. 

On North American Flights, sports equipment is carried as standard baggage allowance.

On all other flights, fees for sports equipment range from 40-50 Euros. 

For business class passengers, transportation of sports equipment is free. 

Aer Lingus will only accept sports equipment if it is packed properly to minimize damage.

Different kinds of sports equipment carry different specifications.

Aer Lingus Airlines Musical Instruments

You can be confident your valuable musical equipment will be in good hands with Aer Lingus.

Smaller, more compact instruments, such as a violin, can be transported as carry-on baggage, provided it is small enough to fit under your seat or in the overhead locker

They must also fit within the following dimensions: 55x40x24cm for most flights, and for regional flights, 48x33x20cm.

Mid-sized instruments, like a guitar, are trickier.

Aer Lingus suggests you buy an additional seat for the instruments at standard prices.

No baggage allowance will be provided for the seat occupied by the instrument.

It must be a window seat and the weight cannot exceed 75kg and fall within these dimensions: 94x58x41cm. 

Large instruments, such as a cello or drum set, cannot be carried in the cabin and must be checked.

Charges will be applied at the same rate as sports equipment.

Pro tip: A hard flight case is recommended for transporting fragile instruments. 

What is the Aer Lingus baggage allowance?

Aer Lingus’ baggage allowance depends on the fare type and route.

For flights within Europe, Plus, Advantage, and AerSpace fares receive 1 x 44 pound (20 kg) checked bag, while Saver fares must purchase luggage.

For Transatlantic flights, Economy Smart and Flex fares include 1 x 50 pound (23 kg) bag and Business/Business Flex fares include 150 pounds (69 kg) that can be split across 3 bags.

Does Aer Lingus allow carry-ons?

Aer Lingus allows all passengers to bring 1 personal item and 1 carry-on bag.

The personal item can measure up to 10 x 13 x 8 inches (25 x 33 x 20 cm) and the carry-on can measure up to 21.5 x 15.5 x 9.5 inches (55 x 40 x 24 cm) and 22 pounds (10 kg).

Does Aer Lingus charge for checked baggage?

Aer Lingus includes checked luggage for some of its fares and routes.

Can you add bags after check-in with Aer Lingus?
