TAP Air Portugal Baggage Policy Fees & Allowance. TAP Air Portugal has quite a few different fare types, and the checked allowance depends on these fare types and the flight route.
TAP has a fairly standard checked and carry-on allowance for economy passengers but a generous allowance for Executive Class passengers, with 2 pieces of carry-on and up to 3 x 70 pound (32 kg) checked bags.
Unfortunately, the additional carry-on does not apply to flights to/from North America.
TAP Air Portugal Carry-On Allowance
If a passenger exceeds the permitted carry-on allowance, then they will be charged the applicable checked bag fee plus a gate handling fee of €70 (~$75) for European flights and €85/$106 for international flights.

- Maximum Weight of Carry-on Luggage: 17.6 lb/ 8 kg
*On Beechcraft equipment, passengers are allowed 1 carry-on weighing up to 13.2 lb/6 kg
Lap Infant Carry-On Policy
- Passengers traveling with an infant may carry onboard infant food required for the flight and other indispensable items must be carried in the adult’s carry-on. A collapsible buggy may also be carried onboard.
Stroller Check Policy
- Passengers may check a stroller, car seat, or basket. Infants are also permitted a 22 pound (10 kg) checked bag.
TAP Air Portugal Checked Baggage Allowance
Individual checked bags may not exceed maximum linear dimensions of 62 inches (158 cm).
Checked bags for Executive or Top Executive fares may weigh up to 70 pounds (32 kg) per item and all other fares, no more than 50 pounds (23 kg).
Passengers traveling on a MilesOnly or Miles&Cash ticket are only permitted 1 bag up to 50 pounds (23 kg) in economy class, or 2 bags each with a maximum weight of 70 pounds (32 kg) if traveling in Executive Class.
Piece Concept
Piece concept is now applicable throughout the entire TAP Portugal network.
In this concept, the following free baggage allowance is permitted:
- TAP Executive: 2 pieces up to 70.5 lb/32 kg
- TAP Plus, TAP Classic, TAP Basic, and TAP Discount: 2 Pieces up to 50 lb/23 kg
- 1 piece (50 lb/23 kg) within Europe (including Morocco and Algeria), and between Europe and USA/Canada
- 2 pieces (70.6 lb/32 kg) between Europe and Brazil (Beechcraft flights only up to 50 lb/23 kg)
Each bag must adhere to the following size requirements:
- Maximum Dimensions: 62 linear inches/158 cm (length + width + height)
*For flights departing from Brazil, passengers in both Executive and Economy class may bring 2 pieces of luggage, 70 lb/32 kg each.
Children under 2 years of age, not occupying a seat are allowed 1 piece of luggage up to 22 lb/10 kg.

- TAP Executive: 66 lb/30 kg
- TAP Plus, TAP Classic, TAP Basic, and TAP Discount: 44 lb/20 kg

Sports Equipment
Some checked items, such as surfboards and bicycles will be charged a fixed handling fee because of size, fragility, or other handling requirements while others may be checked in lieu of one of your checked bags.

Pets (birds) carried in the aircraft cabin on TAP Air Portugal flights.
The size of the container must not exceed 98 cm in the sum of three dimensions: 45х30х23 cm, the weight of the container (with pet/pets) must not exceed 8 kg.
Pets (birds) carried in the baggage compartment, the weight of the container (with pet/pets) must not exceed 45 kg (on some routes 32 kg: USA, Hungary, France, Netherlands).

Service animals accompanying persons with disabilities and emotional support dogs can travel in the cabin for free, this service requires prior notification and consent of the airline.
CPAP Devices:
Passengers who need to travel with a POC or CPAP machine (for treatment of sleep apnea) can carry them on board TAP flights.

Does TAP check carry-on weight?
As with any airline, TAP Air Portugal has size restrictions for carry-on luggage to ensure cabin safety.
They are likely to measure or weigh your bag if it appears to exceed the maximum dimensions or weight, so you must be prepared to check the piece if it does not adhere to the applicable size.
What is the hand luggage allowance on TAP flights?
TAP Air Portugal’s carry-on allowance is 1 personal item across all fare types, that can measure up to 16 x 12 x 5 inches (40 x 30 x 15 cm) and weigh up to 4.5 pounds (2 kg).
For economy passengers, 1 piece of standard carry-on is permitted and 2 pieces for Executive Class that can measure up to 22 x 16 x 8 inches (55 x 40 x 20 cm) and can weigh up to 17.5 pounds (8 kg).
