Iberia Baggage Policy Fees & Allowance

Iberia Baggage Policy Fees & Allowance. While Iberia’s carry-on baggage policy is fairly standard, its checked baggage fees are a bit more complicated than the average carrier.

These fees vary by fare purchased/cabin class, route, season of travel, and time of purchase, as you can see per our tables below, so check closely to determine your cost.

Iberia are relatively strict and now state that you can take one main hand luggage bag on board as well as a personal item free of charge.

According to them, your main bag must fit in the sizer and so be easily stored in the overhead locker.

Your personal item must be small enough to fit underneath the seat in front of you.

And whilst there are ways to mitigate the risk of being caught out with a bag slightly over, you just never know until the day you travel – so we always recommend taking precautions.

All passengers traveling from the U.S. can only carry 1 piece of carry-on baggage and 1 other personal item on their outbound flight, whether they are flying in business or economy.

For Air Nostrum flights, the cabin bag allowance is 8 kg and the maximum dimensions are 45 x 35 x 20 cm.

Lap Infant Carry-on Policy

  • Discount tickets for minors, i.e., children (aged 2 to 11) or infants (under 2 traveling with an adult) will have the same allowance as an adult and the airline will also check a foldable stroller or a car seat free of charge.

Stroller Check Policy

  • A stroller can be checked at the ticket counter or at the gate.

Children under the age of 2 can travel on the lap of an adult accompanying person or in an adjacent seat in a car seat (in this case, the fare corresponds to that for children from 2 to 11 years of age).

In addition to your hand baggage, you can take on board an additional bag with diapers, baby food, clothing and other baby accessories that can be needed during your flight.

Collapsible buggies / strollers are carried free of charge as carry-on baggage (if they do not exceed the allowed hand luggage measurements, they will be placed under the seat / into the overhead locker) or as checked baggage, you can continue to use them until the moment of boarding the plane.

Passengers with special requirements or persons needing help of the airline staff must notify the airline at the time of booking or not later than 48 hours before departure.

Passengers with restricted mobility may carry free of charge a maximum of two manual or powered mobility aids (including wheelchairs): crutches, walking sticks, walkers, rollators, wheelchairs.

Manual wheelchairs (can be used until boarding).

Carriage of powered wheelchairs and other electric mobility aids requires prior notification and consent of the airline.

Iberia Checked Baggage Allowance

All checked bags must adhere to a max weight of 50 pounds (23 kg) and max linear dimensions of 62 inches (158 cm).

As mentioned, your checked baggage allowance is dependent on a number of factors, including the fare you purchased/cabin class.

Even the economy options vary, so make sure you know what you’re allotted with your fare when booking.

Iberia states: “If your ticket indicates “Baggage Allowance: 0PC” (zero pieces) it means that your fare does not include free baggage transport in the hold.”

Children with Child (2-11 years old) or Infant (up to 2 years traveling on your lap) tickets have the same baggage allowance as adult passengers (it may also cover a foldable stroller or a car seat).

To find specific baggage allotments for your flight, please see Iberia’s official baggage calculator.

Iberia Additional/Excess Baggage Fees

Iberia doesn’t make it extremely easy to see your additional/excess baggage fees at a glance.

In terms of excess pieces of luggage: Iberia no longer provides a hard and fast table to assist in calculating your fees.

You must go through the baggage calculator tool which issues information specific to your flight date, cabin class, fare purchased, and time of baggage allotment purchase.

Then you must utilize the Add another bag option to calculate your added fee for excess pieces above your free allowance (if applicable).

We ran a few route searches to give you an idea of additional baggage fees for the various fare types and cabin classes.

You can see from the table below that there doesn’t seem to be a difference in cost whether you are traveling from the U.S. East or West Coast or connecting from Iberia’s hub in Madrid onto other destinations, but do check using the calculator for your specific flight details.

The fees below are applicable to each piece of extra baggage.

Can I Prepay for Baggage?

Iberia does allow passengers the ability to prepay for luggage online or via the mobile app.

Here are the ways to prepay:

  • Log in to the Booking Management area of the Iberia website anytime after booking or you can also add baggage when checking in online from 24 hours before the flight departure.
  • Download and log in to the Iberia app.

Does Iberia charge for checked baggage?

Iberia includes baggage allowance for all fares apart from Economy Basic.

If you book Economy Basic then you can purchase baggage for $65 to $70 for the first bag, $80 to $90 for the second bag, and $150 to $180 for 3+ bags.

How many checked bags on Iberia?

Iberia has a checked baggage allowance of 1 bag for Economy Optimal/Comfort/Optional Flex/Flexible and Business Optional (short- and medium-haul), and 2 bags for premium economy and business class fares.

All checked bags must not exceed 50 pounds (23 kg) and have max linear dimensions of 62 inches (158 cm).

How many bags can you carry on Iberia?

Passengers flying Iberia can carry-on 1 standard carry-on piece and 1 personal item for all fare types apart from Business Plus which has an allowance of 2 bags (except U.S. airports), plus a personal item.

Group flight bookings also have an allowance of 2 standard carry-ons.

How strict is Iberia on baggage size?

All checked bags must adhere to a max weight of 50 pounds (23 kg) and max linear dimensions of 62 inches (158 cm).

In conclusion, Iberia have rules which you must adhere to, otherwise you’ll risk having to pay extra.

If you’ve already got a soft-edged bag which is slightly oversized for example, you shouldn’t worry about that too much.

Just make sure you leave enough room in your bag to squeeze the content into the rectangular sizer if needs be!

If you’ve got a suitcase which is oversized however, then this could easily cause problems and so we recommend staying fully compliant.

If you’re still unconvinced, then we recommend you pay for checked-in baggage.
