All hand luggage carried on board by Business Class passengers must weigh no more than 18 kg (or 40 lbs) in total.

KLM Checked Baggage Allowance

Most KLM ticket types entitle passengers to 1 piece of checked baggage.

Be aware that if you are travelling Economy Light, you will have to reserve a bag if you wish to travel with checked luggage.

Each passenger is allowed to carry up to 9 pieces of checked baggage.

You can do this either at the airport or online before your flight.

If you reserve extra luggage over 24 hours before your flight you will receive a discount from the airline.

Economy passengers on European and intercontinental flights may check 1 bag with total dimensions of max 158 cm (62 in) and a max weight of 23 kg (50 lbs).

Economy passengers on Light tickets do not receive a checked baggage allowance but can purchase an allowance.

One 23 kg (50 lbs) bag costs EUR 25 online, or EUR 40 at the airport, for most routes within Europe.

Business Class passengers are permitted to check in 2 hold bags, each with total dimensions no greater than 158 cm (or 62 in) and each weighing no more than 32 kg (70.5 lbs).

Note that ‘Flying Blue’ club members (except Ivory level) receive additional baggage allowances.

If travelling with an infant without their own seat you may check an additional 10 kg (22 lbs) bag for the infant’s things, except on Light tickets

KLM Excess Baggage Policy

If your baggage is heavier than 32kg or larger than 300cm (H + W + L), you should contact KLM customer service directly to discuss having it transported as cargo.

If your bag weighs more than 23kg (and you do not have a business class ticket which allows you up to 32kg) then you may be liable to pay excess baggage fees.

For more information on the price of this, you should contact the airline directly.

KLM Sports Equipment

KLM can help you transport your sports equipment, but if it is larger than the standard checked baggage dimensions, you should contact customer service directly to make your booking.

Items such as golf clubs, ski equipment, snowboards, and surfboards can be brought as checked baggage within your allowance or as extra baggage.

You can purchase up to 9 items of checked baggage.

KLM Musical Instruments

If you wish to travel with your musical instrument, you have three options on KLM flights:

  • Bring it on board as hand luggage, as long as it is within the cabin baggage size allowance
  • Purchase an extra seat on board, for instance if you are travelling with a cello or a guitar
  • Use your checked baggage allowance for your instrument. Fees will apply if your instrument weighs more than 23kg or is larger than 158cm.

Pro tip: When travelling with your instrument, make sure it is in a hard case to prevent it from being damaged in transit.
