Virgin Atlantic Fleet Airbus A340-600 Details and Pictures

Virgin Atlantic Fleet Airbus A340-600 Details and Pictures. On current fleet, there’s 6 wide-body aircraft Airbus A340-600 on Virgin Atlantic fleet.

Virgin Atlantic were the first airline to introduce the Airbus A340-600, and at 75.3 metres it’s one of the longest civil aircraft made.

You could find yourself flying on Surfer Girl, Scarlet Lady, Bubbles, Lady Luck, Emmeline Heaney, Lady Bird or Dancing Queen.

In terms of range, the A340-600 offers unmatched operational flexibility on non-stop flights over remote areas such as oceans and mountain ranges, allowing for operations that are not subject to ETOPS (Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards) regulations.

This enables airlines to fly more direct routes – even long distances over water or on segments far from airports – saving travel time and cutting fuel consumption.

Virgin Atlantic Fleet Airbus A340-600 Cabin Interior Class Configuration and Seats Layout

The Virgin Atlantic Airbus A340-600 aircraft is configured in three classes, including Upper Class, Premium Economy and Economy.

Virgin charges extra for bulkhead, exit row, and other seats which have more legroom.

These seats are referred to as Extra Legroom Seats.

This three-class A340-600 is configured with economy seats in a 2-4-2 (A-C, D-E-F-G, H-K) layout, premium economy in a 2-3-2 (A-C, D-E-F, H-K) configuration, and business aligned 1-1-1 (A, D, K).

The Upper Class cabin on the A340-600 is large, with 45 herringbone seats across 16 rows between doors 1 and 2.

It was quickly apparent that the 1-1-1 configuration felt much less cramped than the A330 cabin.

The flight was maybe half full in Upper Class.

Premium economy occupies rows 18-23 and each seat has individual nine-inch screens and audio-video on-demand (AVOD) entertainment, as well as tray tables that slide out of the armrests, bottles of water, purple leather upholstery, blankets, and amenity kits containing socks, toothbrushes and paste, eyemasks and biros.

Bulkhead seats A-C and H-K in row 18 offer more legroom so are preferable for those who are taller.

Don’t choose seats A-C or H-K in row 22 or seats D-E-F in row 23 as they are directly in front of economy class and the washrooms so you may suffer from disturbance.

They also have limited recline.

Middle seats E are also best avoided as you don’t have direct aisle access or a view out of a window.

Economy class is spread across two sections on this A340-600 (rows 31-46 and 51-65) and seating is configured 2-4-2 (A-C, D-E-F-G, H-K), which is great if you are in either of the pairs but not so good if you are in one of the middle E-F seats as they feel very claustrophobic.

Seats A-C and H-K are upholstered in grey fabric and have red seatbelts, while middle seats D-E-F-G have red fabric and red seatbelts.

There are individual nine-inch seat-back in-flight entertainment (IFE) screens and remotes in the armrest or in the back of the seat underneath the screen (as with seats D-E-F-G).

The cabin was clean and smart with chrome handles on the overhead bins and air conditioning vents.

Virgin’s economy seats on this aircraft have a pitch of up to 31 inches/79cm, a width of 19 inches/48cm (1.5 inches/4cm more than on its B747s and A340-300s), a recline of six inches/15cm (one inch/2.5cm more than on its other planes) and audio-video on-demand entertainment systems with a good selection of movies.

Middle seats D-E-F-G in row 43 are behind a bulkhead so have tray tables and IFE screens that come out of the arm instead of the seat in front, as do those in exit rows 31 and 51.

Passengers wanting extra legroom will have to pay for it upon checking in at the airport – those seats with an increased pitch of three inches cost from £30, and in exit rows from £50.

Avoid sitting in E-F seats as they offer no direct aisle access and can make you feel claustrophobic.

Those sitting in rows 44-46 and 64-65 may suffer some disturbance from people queuing for the adjacent washrooms.

If you want a decent view out of the window, avoid seats A/K in rows 31-38 as they are over the wing.
